A Different Way To Condition A Space

Targeted comfort without rebuilding the whole house.

A ductless mini-split is a heat pump designed to serve a specific room or group of zones. The indoor and outdoor equipment connect through refrigerant lines, wiring and condensate drainage routed through a small wall penetration rather than a traditional supply-and-return duct system.

That makes ductless worth considering when a space has no ducts, an addition has different heating and cooling needs, or one stubborn area never matches the rest of the home. It can also be a practical option for defined business spaces that need independent temperature control.

Ductless is not automatically the answer for every hot or cold room. Air Design evaluates the load, insulation, exposure, available mounting locations and how the space will be used before recommending equipment.

Good Ductless Candidates

Start with the room—not a box size.

No existing ductwork

The room needs heating and cooling without a major duct extension.

One stubborn space

A finished area stays uncomfortable while the central system serves the rest of the home.

Year-round use

The zone needs both cooling and heat from one system.

Independent control

Occupants want a temperature setting that does not change the entire building.

Where Ductless Fits

Comfort designed around the way you use the space.

Each room brings different sun exposure, insulation, occupancy and heating and cooling demand. Those details shape the system—not square footage alone.

01

Home additions

Condition new living space without extending a full central duct system.

02

Garages & workshops

Add a dedicated comfort zone where practical load and use conditions support it.

03

Bonus & upstairs rooms

Address spaces that run warmer or cooler than the rest of the home.

04

Older homes

Bring heating and cooling to spaces where installing traditional ductwork would be disruptive.

05

Home offices

Control the room you occupy without resetting the entire house.

06

Small business zones

Create independent comfort for offices, conference rooms or other defined areas.

System Design

Single-zone simplicity or multi-zone flexibility?

Air Design plans the system around how many spaces need comfort, how independently they should operate and where equipment can be installed correctly.

01

Single-Zone Systems

One outdoor unit connects to one indoor unit. This focused setup is often a strong fit for an addition, garage, workshop, office or bonus room.

  • Independent control for one space
  • Straightforward system layout
  • Heating and cooling options

02

Multi-Zone Systems

One outdoor unit connects to multiple indoor units. Each indoor unit serves its own zone so different areas can have personalized settings.

  • Multiple rooms or defined areas
  • Individual zone control
  • Coordinated outdoor equipment

Ductless Mini-Split FAQs

  • Can a ductless mini-split provide both heating and cooling?

Yes. Mitsubishi Electric ductless heat-pump systems can provide heating and cooling from the same equipment. The right model and capacity depend on the room, design conditions and intended use.

  • What is the difference between single-zone and multi-zone ductless systems?

A single-zone system connects one outdoor unit to one indoor unit for a specific space. A multi-zone system connects multiple indoor units to one outdoor unit so several areas can have independent temperature control.

  • Are mini-splits only for homes without ductwork?

No. They are also useful for additions, bonus rooms, garages, workshops, upstairs spaces and other areas that need a separate comfort zone or are difficult to serve through existing ducts.

  • How do you determine the right mini-split size?

Air Design evaluates the heating and cooling load, room exposure, insulation, ceiling height, how the space is used and the proposed equipment location. Square footage alone is not enough for a reliable selection.

  • Do ductless systems need maintenance?

Yes. Filters require regular cleaning, and the indoor coil, blower, drain, outdoor unit and electrical connections should be inspected and serviced as conditions require.
